Location

The Fallen Journalists Memorial will be located in the heart of our nation’s capital with the U.S. Capitol building in its backdrop.

In December 2022, the foundation received congressional approval, with an endorsement from the U.S. Secretary of the Interior, to locate the memorial in an area of the capital reserved for commemorative works of “preeminent historical and lasting significance to the United States.” The Commission of Fine Arts then approved the foundation to begin the memorial design process in May 2023.

The site is at Independence Avenue, Maryland Avenue, and 3rd SW, between the National Museum of the American Indian and the Voice of America.  Locating the memorial on an unattached “island” parcel within close proximity of each of the three branches of government underscores the essential and independent role that journalists play in holding those institutions accountable to the people.
