WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 23, 2020) – The leadership of the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation issued the following statements in reaction to the death of former PBS News Anchor Jim Lehrer. Lehrer was a member of the Foundation’s Board of Advisors and an early supporter of the concept of a memorial to fallen journalists.

“Jim Lehrer was a legend in his profession. He was widely respected by both sides of the aisle as evidenced by his role as moderator of twelve presidential debates. He was also a strong and early supporter of our effort to build a memorial for fallen journalists. Jim’s voice will be missed. We send our condolences to his wife Kate, the entire Lehrer family and his former colleagues at PBS.”

Barbara Cochran
President of the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation

“As a former Marine, Jim had great respect for the work of war correspondents who were on the front lines with our men and women in uniform. He understood firsthand the sacrifices they made to bring the story to the American people. He shared this perspective with us as we began our effort to build a memorial to journalists who have died while doing their jobs. The Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation sends our condolences to Jim’s family, his many, many friends in the journalism profession and his fans around the world.”
